Cat meowing: why? what to do?

Like barking in dogs, your cat's meowing allows him to communicate with you. For each message, a different sound: your pet has a thousand things to tell you and it is sometimes difficult to understand him. Here's our advice on how to interpret his meows.

6 reasons why your cat meows

There is no single reason for a cat to meow. It can be:

- To claim

Your cat's meowing is often a request: if she makes a high-pitched, repetitive sound for you, it's quite possible that she wants something. His needs can be food, water, to open the door, to play with him, to cuddle him... It is not uncommon for your pet to meow at night or very early in the morning when he is bored and wants to play with you.

- He's happy to see you

Your cat may also greet you with a high-pitched meow, tail up, which is a form of greeting that expresses her joy at seeing you. It may be accompanied by purring and cuddling.

- He's angry or frightened

Your pet may also show signs of defensive aggression. In this case, the meowing is often loud, long and low-pitched, accompanied by yowling, ears pinned back or a bristling coat.

- He's sick

If your cat is meowing in an unusual and excessive manner, she may be ill. Pay attention to his behavior and stay alert: if you see any worrying signs, don't hesitate to ask your pharmacist or veterinarian for advice.

- He is in heat

During the mating season, the cat emits repeated meows. They can be recognized by their often hoarse, long, intense and guttural sound.

- She's stressed or excited

If your cat is stressed, she may express herself with a jerky meow. This same meow can also be heard when your pet is excited. This is the case, for example, when he sees a prey (bird, insect) and wants to catch it. This meowing is easily recognizable, as it is similar to a "cackling" sound. It is often accompanied by impatient tail movements.

How do I calm my cat's meowing?

To begin with, it's important to know that some cats are naturally very talkative, while others meow very little. This depends on the character of your pet, but also on its breed: Siamese and Asian breeds (Burmese, Balinese, Japanese bobtail ...) are known to be talkative. It is then difficult to calm them down: this criterion must be taken into account before welcoming the animal.

Moreover, a cat can meow because it is hungry, but also by habit to attract your attention. If he tends to express himself as soon as he needs something, it is advisable to ignore him so that he does not get into the habit of begging. Giving in to his demands can reinforce this behavior and get him used to being easily given in.

If, on the other hand, he meows because he is often hungry, there are simple solutions. You can :

- give him a portion of kibble before going to bed;

- give him small amounts regularly during the day;

- buy a kibble dispenser so he can regulate himself and feed himself when he feels the need.

Similarly, if your cat tends to meow - and wake you up - to play at night, try to keep her busy during the day or play with her before bed to let off steam. You can also buy toys that she can play with on her own.

Finally, if your cat is stressed or anxious, there are effective solutions such as the Alphacalm food supplement. This product is ideal for calming your little companion when he shows signs of agitation due to a sudden change of environment, a new arrival in the family (baby or animal), noises that worry him, etc. Cats are very sensitive to their surroundings and can quickly lose their bearings and start meowing. So, in addition to the complementary food, the most important thing is to reassure him by playing with him and cuddling him.

Did you know that?

 Meowing is not your cat's only mode of expression. Tail movements, posture, eye contact and ear position are all signs that can help you better understand your cat. Watching your pet carefully to understand his language will only strengthen your bond with your adorable fur ball.
